School for Young Scientists
"Methods of Comprehensive
Assessment of Seismic Hazard"

Moscow, 3-7 July 2017
Venue: Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the RAS

Geophysical Center of the RAS and Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the RAS have organized from 3 to 7 July 2017 the School for Young Scientists “Methods of Comprehensive Assessment of Seismic Hazard”. The School has been funded by Russian Science Foundation (RSF) within the framework of RSF Project 15-17-30020 "Application of system analysis for estimation of seismic hazard in the regions of Russia, including the Caucasus-Crimea and Altai-Sayan-Baikal regions".

The school was attended by 40 students, of which 36 - students and young scientists (under the age of 35 years). The participants represented 21 scientific and educational institutions. Fourteen Russian and six foreign scientists gave 31 lectures in frame of the School program. The lecturers represented Geophysical Center of the RAS, Institute of Earthquake Prediction Theory and Mathematical Geophysics of the RAS, Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the RAS, Geophysical Survey of the RAS, University of Trieste (Italy), Institute of Earth Physics of Paris (France), National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (Italy), University of Potsdam (Germany), Institute of Geophysics and Engeneering Seismology after A. Nazarov, National Academy of Science of Armenia (Armenia). Representatives of governing bodies of international scientific organizations were among the lecturers: Dr. Simon Hodson, CODATA Executive Director, Dr. Alik Ismail-Zadeh, General Secretary of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics.

The lectures focused on various aspects of seismic hazard assessment including results obtained within the framework of the RSF Project 15-17-30020, which is aimed at development of new system algorithmic approaches to seismic hazard assessment in the active regions of Russia (Caucasus-Crimea and Altai-Sayan-Baikal region) and creation of GIS-applications for mapping and assessment procedures. The following results of the RSF Project No. 15-17-30020 were reflected in the lectures of Russian scientists: approach to sequential recognition of places of possible occurrence of earthquakes for several threshold magnitudes, a new pattern recognition algorithm "Barrier", applicable in problems of determining the places of possible occurrence of strong earthquakes, calibrated catalog of earthquakes in the Altai-Sayan-Baikal region, scheme of morphostructural zoning of the Altai-Sayan-Baikal region, estimation of the coefficients of the Unified Scaling Law for Earthquakes (USLE) for the Altai-Sayan-Baikal region, determination of places of possible occurrence of strong earthquakes in the Mountainous part of the Crimea by transferring the criteria for high-seismic sites obtained for the Caucasus, GIS-oriented database on seismic hazard and risk assessment for the Caucasus and the Crimea, results of the numerical modeling of the dynamics of block structure and seismicity for the Caucasus region. In the lectures of foreign scientists were reflected the results of many years of joint research with Russian colleagues.

During School held direct scientific discussions between students and lecturers, which allowed students to better understand the presented seismic hazard assessment methods and to discuss their own studies and research projects.
